Jim Clark Sr. — Pioneer of the Custom 1911

James E. “Jim” Clark Sr. (1923–2000) was one of the most influential pistolsmiths in the history of the American custom 1911. A former U.S. Marine and accomplished Bullseye competitor, Clark combined competitive shooting experience with exceptional mechanical ingenuity. In 1950, he founded Clark Custom Guns in Louisiana, which became one of the premier names in custom handgun work.

Clark was a true innovator whose modifications were driven by competition and accuracy. He pioneered the conversion of 1911s to .38 Special wadcutter and developed the six-inch long-slide 1911, an innovative design created by welding a section of one 1911 slide to another and then carefully blending the two into a seamless unit. His pistols were used by top competitors and achieved national championships and records. His work on compensated 1911s also helped establish the specialized “pin gun” as an important development in high-performance .45s.

Clark's influence on custom pistolsmithing is difficult to overstate. He helped establish many of the techniques and modifications that would become hallmarks of the modern custom 1911. His achievements were recognized with both the Pistolsmith of the Year Award and the Outstanding American Handgunner Award, making him a foundational figure in American custom handgun history.

One such example is this .45 ACP Clark Long Slide Bullseye pistol, which is featured in Volume 2 of the 1911 Vickers Guide. It features a competition Bo-Mar adjustable rear sight paired with an undercut Patridge front sight, “Tiger Tooth” stippling on the front and backstrap, a Smith & Wesson MTU (Marksmanship Training Unit) barrel and a trigger shoe to reduce the trigger pull.

David Lauck’s reputation as a custom gunsmith is particularly well established in the world of Smith & Wesson revolvers, where his work has focused on turning traditional factory wheelguns into exceptionally durable, practical fighting revolvers. His approach is decidedly functional: stronger sights, better ergonomics, a properly tuned action and careful attention to reliability rather than cosmetic embellishment.

This beautiful Performance Center revolver showcases Lauck’s signature D&L enhancements, including fixed combat rear sights precision-machined from solid steel with a generous sight window, glare-reducing serrations and a snag-free profile, paired with a matching front sight incorporating tritium inserts. Both sights have been carefully radiused and dehorned for concealed carry. The revolver is fitted with D&L PRG (Positive Retention Grip) grips, featuring a carefully engineered angle and contour for improved hand placement and recoil control. Additional work includes a crowned barrel and precisely reduced barrel-to-cylinder gap to the absolute minimum (see 5th picture – I had to open the cylinder to see ANY daylight).  The entire revolver finished in durable DLC.

Power Custom Grand Master Deluxe Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum

This exceptional Power Custom Grand Master Deluxe Ruger Redhawk represents the pinnacle of custom revolver craftsmanship by legendary gunsmith Ron Power. This 1984-production .44 Magnum is No. 66 of only 200 Grand Master Deluxe Redhawks with 5½-inch barrels produced for the American market, and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authentication personally signed by Ron Power, certifying its serial number, 501-09150, and production number.

The revolver features brushed-satin finished surfaces, with a fine stippled backstrap and non-glare treatment throughout the sighting surfaces, including the back of the hammer. The trigger has been rounded and polished, while the action has been completely modified and enhanced with an adjustable overtravel stop. Both sides of the hammer are jeweled, and a stainless-steel shroud houses the ejector rod.

The six cylinder chambers are individually numbered 1 through 6 to assure precise alignment and facilitate exacting custom work. Each sight rib was personally hand-made by Ron Power from 416 stainless steel, adding both functional precision and considerable historical significance to the revolver.

The .44 Magnum is fitted with a 5½-inch Douglas premium stainless-steel barrel, measuring approximately 1 3/16 inches in diameter, with the sides milled perfectly flat. The barrel features a 1:14-inch twist, a counterbored muzzle, and a target-style crown. Magna Porting was performed by the renowned Larry Kelly, further enhancing the revolver's competition-oriented configuration.

The custom Hogue Mono-Grip, crafted from exotic wood by Gary Hogue, features double-panel checkering, comfortable finger grooves, a contrasting spacer, and matching grip cap. The absence of conventional grip screws on the sides provides the revolver with a particularly clean and uncluttered appearance.

Adding to its presentation and collector appeal, this exceptional revolver is accompanied by its handcrafted walnut presentation case by Fred Wenig containing two speed loaders, a Power Custom Limited Patch, Variable Range Sight System instruction manual, 1983 issue of American Handgunner showcasing the Grand Master Deluxe and Ron Power's original Certificate of Authentication, documenting its place as No. 66 of 200 examples produced for the American market.

With its extremely limited production, extensive documented custom work, association with three legendary names in American firearms craftsmanship—Ron Power, Larry Kelly, and Gary Hogue—and original authentication and presentation case, this Power Custom Grand Master Deluxe Ruger Redhawk is a significant example of the golden era of American custom revolver craftsmanship.
